OH MY GOSH this was the absolute WORST airline I have ever been on ever!
My Mom and I got to the airport almost three hours early for an inter-island flight from Maui to Honolulu. The staff treated us as if we were an interruption to their day, and didn't give us any info about the flight other than what gate it was going to leave from. So we went to that gate and waited. After a while we noticed that the flight at the gate next to us was also going to Honolulu and wondered why they did not ask if we wanted to be put on that flight instead as we had checked in so early and that is what airlines usually do in such cases. But, since we had already checked in we never asked to change flights as we assumed (incorrectly) that our luggage would be put on the flight that we had checked in for and even if we got to Honolulu earlier we would still have to wait for it to arrive.
We waited for Aloha Airlines to announce a pre-board as my Mom is a senior citizen who has some difficulty getting around and could have really used that. No such announcement was ever made, just the boarding call, and by that time there was a line all around the waiting room. We did not realize until then, because we were not told, that this airline now has open seating! So, after being the absolute first people waiting almost three hours at the gate, we boarded the plane basically last.
If that had been the end of it, it still wouldn't have been that bad, but, then it got worse! The flight was not full, but the people who had already boarded, who were all obviously frequent flyers, had taken either aisle seats, or piled bags on the outer seat just to make it difficult for anyone to take a seat next to them. Aloha Airlines staff were not even there to tell the customers not to do this, or to help me and my mom, who is obviously a senior citizen who is not walking too well, to find a seat. I end up walking her almost to the back of the plane where one seat is finally available. Then, I find a seat in the very last row where several seats were available. I was almost going to aske her to join me but by then the Aloha Airlines personnel had actually appeared and told me in a very rude tone to get my bag off the seat when I had just put it down for a second so I could take a seat! Nothing was ever said to all the frequent flyers up in front who hogged seats with their bags until everyone had passed them!
When we got to Honolulu, our luggage did not come out with the other luggage for our flight. The people at Alioha Airlines luggage office were too busy discussing their personal social lives to help us find them. Then we found them set off in a corner...they had come in on the earlier flight!
I wrote Aloha Airlines a letter about this incident. I was hoping they would make some mention about wanting to improve their customer service. They initially sent me a postcard saying I would have a response to my letter within 30 days. I did not get a response and called them. They have no customer care line of any kind where you can talk to anyone, they just say there is nothing they can do, they can't even take a message for anyone. I called them every few weeks for four months with no response other than that. Finally they opened a comment section on their website (which they did not have when I first wrote the letter) and I used that to ask about a response to my initial letter. After that I did get a letter back but it really didn't say anything...the overall tone was, "Oh, you had a bad experience on our airline....tough!"
I would not recommend that any tourists to Hawaii ever use this airline. ALOHA AIRLINES DOES NOT HAVE THE ALOHA SPIRIT. They do not seem to care about anyone who is not a frequent flyer (i.e. not a tourist). I think that for some reason they feel that a tourist will never return, so why care? Actually, we do plan to return to Hawaii, but we will no longer be doing any island hopping. Direct flights only from now on, even thought that will limit us to one island per trip, so be it, that is much better than dealing with Aloha Airles again! |
